SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in the US as of November 28, 2020.

The page of the CDC with the latest data on COVID-19 cases on November 28, 2020, was showing staggering levels of new cases. The data allow answering several important questions about SARS-CoV-2 and the epidemic.

1. Will there ever be “herd immunity” for SARS-CoV-2?

The answer is no. Bats do not have “herd immunity” to bat coronaviruses. Humans do not have “herd immunity” to the several endemic coronaviruses. Moreover, in many households, all of the members will be infected with SARS-CoV-2 many times. Indeed, the immunity to SARS-CoV-2 and to most of the other respiratory viruses is not lasting. After a period of time, the level of neutralizing antibodies in the mucosa of respiratory ways declines, and the same virus, the same “variant” of a virus, can infect the same person again. In the households, where members have not understood the rules of hygiene and other prevention measures, 100% of the houshold members will be infected again and again.

From another post on this website:

Though the “Rapid spread” phase may end when the number of reported cases reaches 10 to 20 percent of the population in a country, the slow spread will continue. Occasionally, there will be outbreaks. In many households, 100% of the members will be infected with SARS-CoV-2 sooner or later. Since the immunity to coronaviruses is not lasting, the same households will be infected again with SARS-CoV-2 for the second, third and following times. They will aslo be 100%-infected by any other widely cirulating pathogen.

2. Do masks work?

For the control of the outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2, masks do NOT work. This is illustrated by the statistics of the new SARS-CoV-2 infections from November 28, 2020, in the US. Indeed, the states with the most drastic masks mandates, – notably, those that are forcing people to wear masks outside, – are heavily affected by the current “wave” of the epidemic.

For personal protection, masks should work. Wear a mask in a setting where someone can cough at you, for example, in public transport.

3. Does “virus denial” work?

There were very few US states where governors did not impose absurd lockdowns. Sadly, the same states where affected by “virus denialism”. People opposed the absurd and illegal limitations of freedom. This is good. But people in the “free states” have been also denying and defying the virus. South Dakota, a free US state, has world’s record levels of new infections per 100 thousands of the population. That is, as of November 28, 2020, South Dakota had 116 new daily infections per 100 thousands of the population (see the table above). This shows that virus denial does not work. You need to defy criminal bureaucrats, but you also need to protect yourself from getting infected.

Anthropology of SARS-CoV-2. 31 cases per 100k in New York City and 37/100k in the New York State: “no herd immunity for the dumb ass”, “masks do NOT work”. North and South Dakota: 120/100K and 115/100K, world records? The verdict: “virus denial does NOT work”.
