Catastrophic COVID-19 mortality rates among the hospitalized males in the New York City area: above 80 years old – 60.6%, 70-79 years old – 35.8%, 60-69 years old – 18.7%, 50-59 years old – 12.2%, 20-49 years old – around 7%.

Under the leadership of the incompetent New York governor Cuomo, New York hospitals report catastrophic COVID-19 mortality rates.

From the study by Richardson et al. (1), we learn the catastrophic COVID-19 mortality in the New York Area.

On April 22, 2020, Richardson et al. (2), published a large study on the outcomes among 5700 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the New York City area. From this study, we learn the catastrophic COVID-19 mortality rates there. Only utter incompetence of the medical profession and of the bureaucracy in New York can explain such catastrophic mortality.

The overall mortality rate for hospitalized COVID-19 patients was 21%.

The overall mortality rate among the hospitalized COVID-19 patients with a known outcome was 21%. Richardson et al., 2020 (1):

Outcomes were assessed for 2634 patients, 553 (21%) (of them) died.

21% mortality is in line with what we observe in the worst performing areas in France. There, in some geographic areas, the COVID-19 mortality rates are above 20% for hospitalized patients.

The number of deaths divided by the total number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in different administrative areas ("departments") of France as of April 10, 2020.

France holds the gruesome “world record” in the overall COVID-19 mortality. As of April 20, 2020, the COVID-19 mortality rate there reached 17.66%.

Idiotic totalitarian bureaucrats, incompetent medical doctors, and illiterate patients are all contributing to catastrophic morbidity and mortality of COVID-19.

In the New York City area, the COVID-19 mortality must be higher than in “the record-holding” France.

As of April 20, 2020, the overall, that is for hospitalized and non hospitalized, COVID-19 patients in the US was much lower than in the “record holder” France. But in the New York City area, under the leadership of an incompetent governor Anthony Cuomo, the COVID-19 mortality is probably higher than in France.

Mortality for those requiring mechanical ventilation was 88.1%.

Even more staggering, is the mortality among those patients who received mechanical ventilation. Richardson et al., 2020 (1):

Mortality for those requiring mechanical ventilation was 88.1%.

14.2% were treated in an ICU, 12.2% received invasive mechanical ventilation.

Richardson et al., 2020 (1):

During hospitalization, 373 patients (14.2%) (median age, 68 years [IQR, 56-78]; 33.5% female) were treated in the intensive care unit care, 320 (12.2%) received invasive mechanical ventilation.

In the New York City area, younger patients, aged 18 to 65, receive mechanical ventilation more often than those older than 65. Strange. Richardson et al., 2020 (1):

For both patients discharged alive and those who died, the percentage of patients who were treated in the ICU or received invasive mechanical ventilation was increased for the 18-to-65 age group compared with the older-than-65 years age group.

Conclusions: At this point, the COVID-19 mortality rate is determined by the illiteracy of the patients and the incompetence of medical doctors.

It is clear now that maximizing the chances of a good outcome following an inevitable infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus is a matter of personal responsibility.
